Getting Started

Why are you seeking therapy? If you’re like most people, you simply want to be happy. You might feel stuck, stressed, overwhelmed, and not particularly connected with the people around you. Here, we won’t try to make you feel happy.

In fact, that’s the main problem with people who come to see us:  they’ve been trying to get happy over and over again with little long-term success. Sure, they might feel happy temporarily, but what they’re doing fails over time. Ultimately, they focus too much on things that don’t bring lasting contentment. Sound familiar?

At SoHo CBT+M, our therapists are committed to helping you in a different way.  We want to make you better than happy℠.

Four Focus Areas

PRESENCE

It is vitally important for you to be present and aware of your own life. It allows you to savor its vitality and learn what’s most helpful for you. Using mindfulness, we help you learn how to pay attention in ways that cultivate relaxation and a deeper understanding of who you are.

UNDERSTANDING

We need a way of understanding our world and ourselves. Why are you this way? Why is the world like this? Why do people do what they do?  We provide possibilities from psychological perspectives, while encouraging you to explore spiritual and scientific ones, too.

PURPOSE

Often, people say, “So, I’m mindful. Now what?” Now, there is an opportunity to direct your own actions (and mind) toward what’s important in your life. Maybe you value relationships or kindness or gratitude. Whatever it is, you need to be sure that you’re committed to creating the kind of life you want, while overcoming obstacles along the way.

LOVE

We know that relationships are vitally important to us as a species. Yet, we often struggle to connect with people in caring ways and encourage them to love and accept who we are. We help you identify and overcome anything that you do to discourage others from loving you. We also provide support in the times when you’re unable to embody your most loving self.

Our Specialties

To help you grow and develop in these four areas, we use the principles and techniques of:

Our approach is practical and empathic. We strive to provide you with the insight and tools necessary to live the life that you want, while cultivating acceptance around areas of your life that cannot be changed. Throughout it all, we pride ourselves on providing services that reflect our warmth, understanding, and expertise. And, interestingly, by attending to these four areas in your life, happiness naturally flows.

For those of you seeking help with a specific diagnosis (e.g., anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, ADD/ADHD, etc.), we provide you with the skills necessary to manage (or even overcome) these conditions. (We are cognitive-behavioral therapists, after all). In addition, we believe that you are more than a diagnosis or a laundry list of problems. So, we’ll also help you live in ways that are aspirational, positive, and affirming yourself as a whole human being.
