Taoist Cognitive Therapy

We are excited to announce our new psychotherapy program in Taoist Cognitive Therapy.  Developed by Dr. Doris Chang and her collaborators in China, Taoist Cognitive Therapy (TCT) is a 14-session, evidence-based psychotherapy for the treatment of anxiety.  Drawing from Western notions of cognition and behaviorism as well as Chinese beliefs in the importance of living in harmony with nature (the Tao), TCT promotes a more organic and natural way of managing anxiety.  It encourages the acceptance of anxiety through the application of specific Taoist values and principles.

What?

TCT consists of 3 stages of treatment.  The first 4 sessions incorporate an assessment and orientation to the therapy model.  You will explore the situations and processes that exacerbate your anxiety and learn how a Taoist perspective can help.  The next 4 sessions provide a thorough introduction to 8 fundamental Taoist principles that can be applied to your common anxiety-provoking problems and concerns.  The third and final stage of TCT helps to reinforce and internalize these principles, while applying them to your future worries.

Who?

To date, research studies on TCT have been conducted with Chinese natives and Chinese immigrants to the United States.  We expect that TCT would be helpful for other Asian Americans as well as people who…

  1. have prior experience with (or openness to) Taoism or Chinese philosophy; or

  2. are willing to consider non-Western perspectives on illness and healing; or

  3. have an interest in contemplative practices, including mindfulness and qigong

How?

Each psychotherapy session builds upon the prior one; you’ll learn how to manage worrisome thoughts by balancing change and acceptance.  In between meetings, you’ll be asked to complete psychotherapy homework that will help consolidate what you’ve learned.

When?

TCT is delivered in 14 sessions over a period of 4 - 5 months.  The first 12 sessions occur weekly, while the last two are spread out biweekly.  However, this is a flexible approach, and the time may vary if there are other issues or crises that come up that require attention.  You are also welcome to continue working with your therapist even after the 14 sessions are completed.

Why?

TCT is part of a movement within cognitive-behavioral therapy towards acceptance- and values-based interventions.  Research has shown TCT to be helpful in reducing anxiety among Chinese immigrants. Ongoing research is exploring its effects with other populations.

Anything else?

In our honor of AAPI Heritage Month and in recognition of the increasing violence directed towards Asian Americans during the COVID epidemic, we will donate 100% of the profits from TCT to Stop AAPI Hate and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.  This donation applies to all new TCT clients who start therapy during the month of May.
